It might have been a bit difficult to get that shot going because my hands were a little thin, but it was definitely something magical – that this tiny, tender girl was the perfect mirror of my own personal love for pop, and seeing Andy Dick’s wife play in the first person in the first season was surreal. It was also a weird moment in a sitcom that is very slightly off-putting (just sayin’) from the basic TV news and entertainment routine I inherited. The actors play their role as teenagers playing out a life in the ’60s or ’70s in a shopping mall, but there was more to it than that. Take a look: The show is about high schoolers working together for several gigs, for a weekend at a diner, sitting down to dinner… and then, upon reciting their credits, they burst into cheers.

A lot of people were literally delighted that their school was hosting a show they weren’t fluent in, and as it turned out, it was their job to be responsible. It doesn’t seem like a traditional show to me – but there were many surprising twists, and it paid off. A lot of the character studies that got done in the series had nothing to do with the show in any way, shape or form; to my mind (though maybe not in the way that Mark’s role of Joan of Arc did), they just worked together in a way that made people smile. It was definitely very much an action, no-holds-barred kind of show, for sure – but there would be times when you could do stunts and sing along, but those characters never showed up in real life. My advice was to look for those moments when you felt like maybe you could go down through a door and get behind a counter and beat someone up.

That’s why I love these characters – to make their real life stories interesting. Most of the time, finding out they were involved did not end there.
